US President Donald Trump yesterday renewed sanctions on Zimbabwe.
This follows what is believed to be calls made by the MDC Alliance for Zimbabwe to be hit by fresh sanctions if Zanu PF won the elections.
With Zanu PF having won the elections retaining its ruling party status, President Trump effected into to law the ZIDERA.
In a statement, White House said,
“On Wednesday, August 8, 2018, the President signed into law: S. 2779, the “Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Ammendment Act of 2018,” which ammends the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act of 2001,” read the statement.
The Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (ZIDERA) (S. 494) is an act passed by the United States Congress which imposed economic sanctions on Zimbabwe, allegedly to provide for a transition to democracy and to promote economic recovery.
