A 27-year-old man, Allan Mutimusakwa has left residents from Mucheke Suburb in Masvingo stunned after he committed suicide in the 12 Apostles Church.
The deceased is said to have locked himself inside to stop his mother, a Policeman and friend from interfering into his plot to kill himself.
The trio is said to have desperately pleaded with Mutimusakwa not to take his life, which was in vain and by the time they broke in, he was dead.
Friend to the deceased Fortune Magedhe confirmed the incident and said he arrived at the Church where Mutimusakwa worked as a security guard at midnight after he had received a call from Allan about his intentions to commit suicide.
Magedhe who passed on the message to the mother of the deceased was accompanied by a police officer when he arrived at the scene.
Upon arrival the police officer found out that Mutimusakwa had barricaded himself inside and pleaded with the deceased to unlatch the door.
“When I called out to him to open the door, he thanked me for coming and said I had done well. He however then said it was too late for his life to be served for he was already taking his life. I tried to dissuade him and wait for me to come in but everything went quiet and by the time we managed to break the door, he was dead, said Magedhe.
Mutimusakwa’s mother arrived at the scene within the nick of time to witness the tragic event.
Masvingo Police spokesperson Charity Mazula confirmed the story and said that the deceased had not given any reasons for taking his life.
Magedhe said he had been together with Mutimusakwa that Saturday evening and had only been made aware of the intentions of the deceased when he received a phone call from him disclosing his intentions.
Magedhe said that in the phone call he received at 11:46pm Mutimusakwa was in tears and said
“Mukoma ndatambura kwenguva yakarebesa munozviziva imi. (My brother I have suffered for long and you know it)”
The deceased friend tried persuading him to put his plans on hold, which was unfruitful.
