Former President Robert Mugabe’s son Robert Junior is reported to be facing criminal charges in South Africa after he allegedly intimidated South African model, Gabriella Engels. Engels who made headlines last year after she accused (then) First Lady Grace Mugabe of assaulting her with an extension cable, filed the case against Robert Junior on Thursday. Engels who is being represented by South African advocacy group AfriForum has vowed to take Grace to court to get justice.
Willie Spies, a lawyer for Afriforum, said the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) should now take action to prosecute Mrs Mugabe and seek her extradition from Zimbabwe to South Africa, after the South Gauteng High Court declared the South African government’s decision to grant Grace Mugabe diplomatic immunity unconstitutional and set it aside.
In October, AfriForum accused one of the Mugabe boys of pressurising Engels to drop the charges against his mother. AfriForum’s CEO Kallie Kriel told journalists in Pretoria,
We’ve had a complaint, we were contacted by Gabriella Engels informing us that one of Mrs Mugabe’s sons in South Africa contacted her, and tried to convince her not to go ahead with the case. We have informed the police, that they should look at this because it is interference with the judicial process and we believe that is very unfortunate…That case, we believe will be going ahead [in courts].
